Assignment 1 "Scavenger hunt"

            The purpose of this assignment is to give you the basic tools of the photographic language of expression. The assignment centers on the basic technical operations of the camera. You should begin to see creatively.

            The requirements of the assignment are as follows:

-at least two rolls of 36 exposures

-a neatly written record of the exposures made on every frame;

-Edit down to at least six slides demonstrating the most successful and interesting pictures from these two rolls of film;

-in your slide pages you must include all of the following camera techniques:

1. Everything in the picture in focus (wide depth of field)

2. Everything in the picture out of focus;

3. Sharp focus on the subject, but everything else of focus (shallow depth of field);

4. High camera angle (taken from at least 10 feet above subject);

5. Low camera angle (camera placed at ground level);

6. Panning;

7. Stop action (fast shutter speed);

8. Blurred motion (slow shutter speed);

9. High key picture (mostly light toned, you must bracket by changing aperture);

10. Low key picture (mostly dark toned, bracket by changing shutter speed);

11. Picture with strong visual focal point of interest;

12. Picture with no visual focal point of interest;

13. Long exposure (more than one second);

14. Picture with a light source inside the frame;

15. Backlit subject (silhouette);

16. Close-up (as close as your lens will allow you to focus)

17. A reflection

            On the slide mount, using your fine point sharpie, label each slide with one numbers  of the above. Always label all slides with your full name. You must do at least two of each of these. The assignment must be turned in an 8.5” x 11” manila envelope. Remember do not do the obvious, put some thought into every image. Ask yourself "How can I photograph something in such a way that it doesn't look ordinarily?" The subject matter of the pictures is up to you. It is your approach to the problem that will make you stand out. Technique is very important at this stage, it is the alphabet that will become a language.
